Privacy Policy
Effective July 6, 2026.
1. What we collect
When you create an account we store your email address, your property or business name, and a hashed password (we never store the password itself). When you add a property we store its name, region, coordinates, booking link, and the details you choose to show on your page, plus your billing status. That is the whole list.
2. How we use it
We use your property's coordinates to compute its stargazing forecasts, your property details to render your public page, your email to sign you in and send account email such as password resets, and your billing status to know whether your page should be live.
3. What your public page reveals
Your public forecast page shows your property's region-level location only. The exact coordinates you give us stay on our servers, are used only to compute your forecasts, and are never sent to visitors' browsers. The map on your page draws a broad circle over the general area, never a pin, and its center is deliberately offset from your exact spot.
4. Who processes data for us
We run on a small set of service providers: Polar (our Merchant of Record for payments; Polar sells you the subscription, pays us, and your card details go to Polar, not to us), Cloudflare (hosting), Neon (database), and Resend (account email). When you set up a property we geocode its address with OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service, the near-term cloud-cover overlay on your public page comes from Open-Meteo (which receives the property's coordinates), and the map loads tiles from CARTO. Each provider receives only what it needs to do its job.
5. What we never do
We do not sell your personal data, and we do not share it with advertisers.
6. Cookies
DarkSky Index sets one cookie: the session cookie that keeps you signed in to your dashboard. There are no analytics trackers and no advertising cookies, on your dashboard or on your public page.
7. Retention and deletion
We keep your data while your account is active. If you want your account and its data deleted, email support@darkskyindex.com and we will delete them.
8. Guests who visit your page
Visitors to a public forecast page do not need accounts. To count page views and prevent abuse we record a one-way hash of a visitor's IP address (never the address itself), together with which page was viewed. Beyond that and the standard server logs every website produces, we collect no personal data about visitors.
9. Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we will update the effective date at the top of this page.
